In 2003, Dr. Bense was
appointed by Governor Jeb Bush as the first
Chairman of the Florida Historical Commission. She is the Chair of the
Department of Anthropology at the University of West Florida, Chairman of the Florida National Register Review
Board, and a Director and Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee of the
Society for Historical Archaeology. Dr. Bense is the author of numerous books
and scholarly articles and earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Washington State University.

Dr. Rivers is Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and one of two Distinguished Professors of History at Florida A&M University, where he has taught for the past 24 years. A
specialist on African-American, Southern, and Florida history, he is the recipient of over 35 awards for
his research, publications, and services to the community. In 2001, Dr.
Rivers received a State of Florida Resolution from Governor Jeb Bush
for his book, Slavery in Florida, and for his overall contribution to
the study of Florida history. Dr. Rivers holds a Bachelor's degree from
Fort Valley State University and a Master's degree from Villanova University. He earned a Doctor of Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a Ph.D. from the
University of London.
